Provincial Society cancels Stokes Bay rally

The Provincial Society has cancelled its annual rally at Stokes Bay planned for Sunday 2 August.

“The Covid-19 outbreak and lockdown continues to impact us all, and the safety and wellbeing of the attendees at our rally is paramount,” says rally team leader Richard Moss. “We do not feel it would be possible to enforce lockdown measures such as social distancing rules on the open rally field as this would impact access to vehicles, vehicle rides and access to the trade stalls, which together form the very heart of the rally event. In addition, it would not be appropriate during the rally planning stage to divert volunteer and local council resources from their principal focus of keeping us safe during the Covid-19 crisis.

“We are grateful for the support that we receive each year for this event from the local transport industry, preserved vehicle owners, traders and stall holders, society members and visiting members of the public, but we recognise and respect that in these extraordinary times, many may be experiencing commercial and financial challenges with people furloughed, vehicles declared SORN and difficulties getting vehicle maintenance, so again we have to make the right choice and allow these groups to focus on their own wellbeing.”

He says the Provincial Society Rally will be back in August 2021 and the society will continue to run events when possible during the year.

“This has not been an easy decision to take, but we feel it is the right one in the current circumstances,” says Moss. “We apologise for any inconvenience and hope that you all remain safe and well.”
