London sightseeing operators suspend services ‘for the duration’

The four leading operators of open-top sightseeing tours in London — Big Bus, The Original Tour, Golden Tours and London City Tours — have suspended operations for the duration of coronavirus restrictions.

“As part of the recent statement given by prime minister Boris Johnson, stringent advice was given which requires people to avoid social interaction in closed spaces as well as non-essential travel. They also advised that the coronavirus has progressed farther in London than any other region in the UK,” they say in a joint statement.

“We fully support the government’s advice and in light of its official statement, we have taken the collective decision to pause our sightseeing services in London. We owe an inherent duty of care to our colleagues and our guests so it is important that we treat this issue with the highest priority. We have decided to take a coordinated approach to this government advice and act as one for the protection of all participants. We sincerely apologise if this causes any inconvenience to our guests who may be planning to visit our city in the near future or who are already here.

“We will closely monitor the advice of the relevant government and health authorities in the coming weeks to ascertain how long our industry should be suspended. At this point, we have no certainty about the length of this pause however it is likely there will be a suspension of at least a month, at which point the situation will be reviewed. We will only return to the market when we collectively consider it is safe to do so.

“We realise these are uncertain times and very much appreciate the patience and understanding of all visitors to our city in the coming weeks. Our main priority is to ensure the health and wellbeing of our colleagues and our guests, as well as their family and friends at home who are in close contact with them.”
